2011 Apprentice Tool Scholarships

Southern Group Training is offering five Apprenticeship Tool Scholarships to Southland secondary school students. The Scholarships, valued at $1,000.00 each, are to provide tools required for the apprenticeship of the successful applicants’ choice of career.


Each Scholarship will be redeemed upon successful completion of the associated pre apprenticeship programme. If no appropriate pre apprenticeship course is available locally the Scholarship will be redeemed upon the successful applicant being signed into a Modern Apprenticeship.


Apprentices employed with Southern Group Training automatically have their Training Manual and training fees paid for, and are provided with personal protective equipment.


Eligibility Criteria:
  • Applicants must be between 16 and 18 years of age.
  • Applicants should have NCEA Level 1 in English, maths, science, graphics and technology with preference given to those with NCEA Level 2 in English and maths.
  • Applicants must show a keen interest in being an apprentice and this will be evidenced by the subjects they have taken at school, their school reports, teacher’s comments, and projects undertaken.
  • The applicant’s interest in learning will be evidenced by their good attendance record at school.
  • Applicants must be New Zealand residents.
  • Students already enrolled in pre apprenticeship courses are not eligible.
  • The economic needs to the applicant may be a factor in deciding the Scholarship.


Application forms are available by contacting Southern Group Training on 03 218 8532, applicants are required to apply, in their own handwriting and enclosing with the application form.


Applicants should provide:

  • copies of school reports for the previous eighteen months
  • portfolio of projects
  • copy of their current NZQA Record of Learning
  • birth certificate
  • drivers licence (if in possession of one)
  • letter of support from parent/guardian


All applicants will be advised of the outcome of their application. The selection process will involve evaluation of the candidate’s Scholarship Application and supporting material, an independent assessment, and panel interview.
