Ross Aitken - Maintenance and Diagnostics

Ross completed his secondary education at Central Southland College and entered into tertiary education through an apprenticeship. He began by completing the Level 2 National Certificate in Manufacturing and Mechanical at the Southern Institute of Technology. During this time he was offered an engineering apprenticeship with Southern Group Training on secondment with NZAS where he completed his Level 4 National Certificate in Mechanical Engineering.

The practical elements of his qualification were taught on the job and through annual three weekly block courses at the Southern Institute of Technology. The theory elements are taught through weekly evening classes.

Once Ross had completed the theory assessment for a unit standard he was then able to be assessed in the practical elements, provided that he was able to prove that he was competent in the various tasks. To achieve practical competency Ross had to be able to complete the required practical tasks consistently well, unsupervised, in a commercial timeframe, using safe work practices.

In the second year of his apprenticeship Ross entered the Otago Southland SkillEX competition in the Engineering Machining Section which he won. He went on to represent Otago Southland in the National Final held in Auckland the following year and acquitted himself very well
