Southern Group Training Trust is seeking to employ a Mechanical Engineering General Engineering apprentice. Vacancies are in Invercargill. A Mechanical Engineering - General Engineering Apprentice works in a general engineering workshop, and the work may involve:

  • fitting and machining
  • welding
  • maintenance
  • hydraulics and pneumatics
  • marine or rail engineering
  • fabrication
The successful candidate will need to:
  • have a restricted or full driver’s license
  • be a good communicator
  • be genuinely interested in learning the skills of the trade
  • have NCEA Level 1 and preferably Level 2

Painting and Decorating

Southern Group Training is seeking to employ a painting and decorating apprentice.

A painter and decorator apprentice is taught how to:

  • measure surfaces to be able to quote a price for the work
  • remove old paint and wallpaper
  • repair cracks and damage to surfaces
  • clean and prepare surfaces
  • apply paint using a variety of decorative methods
  • hang wall coverings such as wallpaper or vinyl
Pre employment requirements:
  • NCEA Level 2 preferable
  • Restricted Drivers Licence minimum
  • Pre Employment Drug Test

Roofing Apprentice

A roofer repairs or constructs roofs and may do some or all of the following, using a variety of materials such as corrugated iron, tiles, shingles and butyl:

  • remove the damaged iron, tiles or other materials from the roof
  • measure the roof and mark out the work area
  • select and estimate the amount of materials to be used
  • carry the roofing material up to the roof
  • install spouting and downpipes and flashing
  • erect scaffolding and rig safety equipment
  • do minor repairs to the structure of roofs
  • cut roofing materials to size and attach roofing and cladding to buildings
  • work on houses and buildings that are being built, repaired or altered
  • work at heights and outside except when conditions are too dangerous because of rain, wind or snow
Useful experience would include most work in the building and construction industry. The successful candidate needs to be/have
  • safety conscious
  • comfortable with heights
  • quick and efficient, with an eye for detail
  • able to follow instructions
  • able to work well as part of a team
  • basic math skills
  • organised
  • fit and healthy – some heavy lifting required
  • good hand-eye co-ordination
  • a current drivers licence.
It is preferred that apprentices have three years secondary education with unit standards in maths and English being an advantage. The successful applicants will gain a New Zealand Certificate in Roofing – Installer (Level 4). Carpentry

Southern Group Training Trust is seeking to employ a Carpentry apprentice in the Southland area. 

Carpenters plan, supervise and work on the construction and alteration of buildings.

A carpentry apprentice is taught how to:

  • Interpret plans and instructions
  • calculate the materials required
  • construct, alter and repair buildings
  • ensure building standards are being met
The successful applicant will gain a Level 4 NZ Certificate in Carpentry.

The successful candidate needs to be fit & healthy, be able to pass Drug and Alcohol screening, have a passion for the trade, NZ Citizenship and  a drivers licence. Preference will be given to Applicants who have experience in the industry, completed NCEA L2 or a relevant pre trade course.

Plumbing

Shot of a plumber fixing a pipe Southern Group Training is seeking to employ a plumbing apprentice.  A plumber assembles, installs and repairs the pipes, fixtures and fittings used to supply water and to remove wastes. A plumbing apprentice is taught how to:

  • replace or repair damaged pipes
  • cut holes in walls for new pipes
  • measure, cut and shape pipes
  • install and join pipes and fittings
  • test joins for leaks
  • repair and maintain pipes and fixtures
  • install water supply systems to bathrooms, kitchens and laundries
  • install and maintain hot water and heating systems
  • install and repair roofing pipes
The successful candidate will need to:
  • have NCEA Level 1 and preferably Level 2
  • have a restricted or full driver’s license
  • pass a pre employment alcohol and other drugs test
  • be genuinely interested in learning the skills of the trade
