Plasterer (Exterior)

Description:

An exterior plasterer applies cement based plaster or modified plaster to the ceilings, floors, and inside and outside walls of buildings.

Tasks and Duties:

decide whether the surface will be covered using cement based plaster or modified plaster
may erect the scaffolding
prepare the surface for plastering
mix the plaster
spread the mixture over the surface
create decorative textures in the finishing coats
may apply waterproofing coats to structures.

Skills:

Exterior plasterers need to have organisational ability, practical skills and the ability to follow instructions. They also need to have problem-solving skills, skill in making calculations, an eye for detail and good oral communication skills.

Knowledge:

Personal Qualities:

Exterior plasterers should be careful, creative, artistic, reliable, able to work well under pressure and methodical in their work habits.

Physical Requirements:

Exterior plasterers should be fit and healthy, as the work can be very physical. They also need to have strong arms, a strong back and good eyesight (with or without glasses).

Educational Requirements:

NCEA Level 1 in English, maths, graphics and science is preferred.

Entry Requirements:

A current drivers license is generally required.
Useful Experience
Experience in the building industry, as a plasterer’s labourer or a carpenter, or work using hand tools may be useful for exterior plasterers.

Training on the job

Skills are gained on the job. Exterior plasterers may take trade-related courses, while working, in order to complete national certificates offered by the Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation.

Work Places

Exterior plasterers work on buildings that are being renovated or built. Exterior plasterers work both indoors and outdoors.
