Frequently Asked Questions for the Apprentice

We’ve put together a list of some of the questions we get asked a lot, if what you want to know isn’t answered here then all you have to do is contact us and we’ll be more than happy to answer any questions you might have.

  • What is an apprenticeship ?

An Apprenticeship is on-the-job practical training and off-the-job theory based instruction which enables you to earn as you learn.

An apprenticeship is a specific employment arrangement between you, the apprentice, and us the employer.

The apprentice is treated like any other employee in the workshop and has the same responsibilities and benefits. Once your qualification is obtained you become a recognised tradesperson.

  • The Money

By law as of 1 April 2023 the training wage is $18.16 an hour before tax.

However, your wage rate with us will be more depending on your experience, skills and supporting qualifications.

As an apprentice you have an annual wage review and may for consistently good work, attract an interim wage review.

  • What You Need To Do

Southern Group Training accept applications from anyone at any time for any trade apprenticeship. Once we receive your application you will be invited in for an assessment and we will provide you with an overview of what’s involved in an apprenticeship.

Following this you will be invited in for an interview with the training manager who specialises in your trade.

However employers are often seeking people with proven skills so there are advantages in completing appropriate prior training. This could be on of the pre apprenticeship courses offered by Te Pukenga – Southern Institute of Technology (SIT).

  • What about school

To enable you to complete an apprenticeship, which is a Level 4 National Certificate, you should have completed NCEA level 1 in English, math and science.

These skills will form the foundation for any apprenticeship.

Graphics and technology are other good subject choices, ideally you will also have completed NCEA Level 2.

  • What it costs YOU

Nothing if you are employed by Southern Group Training. We pay for all our apprentices training costs.

Southern Group Training pays for your training manual, evening class, correspondence and/or block course fees along with travel and accommodation costs if the block course is not held near you.

Your personal protective equipment is supplied by Southern Group Training and you will also be offered an interest free tool loan to provide you with a basic tool kit.

  • How long will it take?

Usually three to four years depending on the industry requirements and the ability and application of the apprentice.

If you have successfully completed a relevant pre apprenticeship course this is effectively the completion of the first year of your apprenticeship and therefore your apprenticeship should take less time to complete.

  • Pre Apprenticeship Courses

Pre apprenticeship courses are usually full time courses lasting between six and ten months. After completing the pre apprenticeship course you are more employable as an apprentice.

Southern Group Training often contacts the training provider looking to recruit students who have completed a relevant pre apprenticeship course.
